The Family of Ruth Dumbrill formerly Seymour

She was born 26 August 1810 at Jevington and baptised 14 October 1810 at Independent Non-Conformist Chapel, Heathfield.

She married John Neville Dumbrill (of Eastbourne) at Willingdon, after banns, 4 May 1833. The witnesses were Jos. Seymour, P. Seymour, M.L. Dumbrill and H. Dumbrill.

In 1861 Ruth was a visitor at 1 Royal Crescent, St Mary Abbotts, Kensington, in the household of Frances Smith, a widow aged 84, independent and born at Rochester, Kent. Ruth was aged 56 and born at Jevington. She was (apparently) also a widow and independent. With her was Isobella Dumbrill, aged 14 and born at Eastbourne. It is possible that she was living apart from John.

In 1871, at 1 Wish Road, Eastbourne, John N. Dumbrill was married, aged 59, a yeoman and born at Eastbourne. Ruth was not with him. Living with him was his sister Mary L. Dumbrill, single, aged 63 and born at Eastbourne. His daughter was Ann S. Dumbrill, aged 36 and born at Eastbourne and his grandson was John N. W. Dumbrill, aged 9 and born at Eastbourne.

Ruth Seymour Dumbrill died in the September quarter 1872 in the Pancras district.

In 1881, at Old Wish Cottage, Wish Lane, Eastbourne, John Dumbrill was a widower, aged 69, a lodging house keeper, born in Eastbourne. His housekeeper was his daughter Ann S. Dumbrill, single, aged 46 and born at Eastbourne. With him was a grandson, Herbert Dumbrill aged 16 and born at Eastbourne.

John and Ruth's children were:

  1. Ann S., born about 1834 at Eastbourne.
  2. Henry, born about 1841, at Eastbourne. In 1871 he was living at 46 Liverpool Street, Pancras (see Sophia French late Porter formerly Seymour), a professor of gastronomy. In 1881 at 6 Bullen Street, Battersea he was aged 39, a professor of gastronomy, born at Eastbourne. His wife was Constance, aged 25 and born at Oxted, Surrey and his children were Henry N. aged 4 born at Oxted, Edith R.C. aged 3 born at Paddington, Ethel aged 1 and Leonard S. aged 3 months both born at Battersea. There was also a visitor Edith A Outtrim, single, aged 19 and born at Oxted.
  3. Isabella Ruth, birth registered in the September quarter 1846 in the Eastbourne district.
