The Family of William Searle Junior

He was baptised 28 April 1805 at Chertsey.  He was a son of William Searle.

 

He married Hannah.

 

In the census of 1841, at High Street, Great Amwell, William was aged 36, a carpenter and Hannah was aged 34.  Both were born outside Hertfordshire.  With them were Harriet aged 11, not born in the county, James, aged 5, George aged 3, and Albert aged 1 all born in the county.

 

In the census of 1851, in Ware Valley, Hoddesdon, Herts, William was aged 45, a carpenter and born at Chertsey.  His wife, Hannah, was aged 44 and born at Cobham, Surrey.  Their children were James, aged 15 a carpenter’s boy, George aged 13 a farmer’s boy, Edward aged 9, Charlotte aged 7, Zebulum aged 5, Albert aged 11, all born at Amwell, Herts and Morriss aged 11 months and born at Hoddesdon.

 

In the census of 1861, at Ware Valley, Broxbourne, William was aged 56, a journeyman carpenter born at Chertsey.  His wife, Hannah was aged 54 and born at Cobham.  Their children were Zebulane aged 14, Morrice aged 10 and Arthur aged 8, all born at Hoddesdon.

 

William and Hannah's children were:

Harriet Searle, born 30 March 1830 and baptised 18 April 1830 at Chertsey.

William Searle, born 2 February 1832 and baptised 4 March 1832 at Chertsey.

Sarah Searle, born 20 January 1834 and baptised 16 February 1834 at Chertsey.

James Searle, born about 1835 at Amwell, Herts. and baptized 29 November 1835 at Great Amwell.

George Searle, born about 1837 at Amwell, Herts. and baptized 21 January 1838 at Great Amwell.

Albert Searle, born about 1839 at Amwell, Herts. and baptized 19 January 1840 at Great Amwell.

He married Eliza, probably Jennings, in the Ware district in the September quarter 1861.

In the census of 1881, at 15 Park Terrace, Hornsey, Middx, Albert was aged 41, a turncock (waterworks servant) born at Hoddesdon. 

His wife, Eliza, was aged 40 and born at Royston, Essex.  Their children were Eliza aged 17, William George aged 15 a clerk, Emily aged 12 all born in Islington, Maurice aged 5 and Ernest aged 3, both born in Hornsey.

William George Searle, born about 1865 in Islington.

Emily Searle, born about 1868 in Islington.

Maurice Searle, born about 1875 in Hornsey.

Ernest Searle, born about 1877 in Hornsey.

Edward Searle, born about 1841 at Amwell, Herts. and baptized 30 January 1842 at Hoddesdon.

In the census of 1881 at 4 Francis Street, London, Edward was aged 38, a journeyman baker born at Hoddesdon.  His wife, Jane, was aged 40 and born at Woolstone, Berks.  Their children were Edward J. aged 14, Maurice H. aged 12, Alice aged 9, Florence J. aged 4 and William J. aged 1, all born in London Middx.

There is the death registration of a Jane Searle in the Bethnal Green district in the December quarter 1888.  She was aged 48.

In the 1891 census index, in the registration district of Bethnal Green (north), there was just one family with Edward aged 48, Maurice aged 22, Alice aged 19, Florence aged 14 and William aged 11.  Jane was not with them.

Edward and Jane’s children were:

Edward James Searle, born about 1866 in London, Middx., registered in St Luke district, March quarter 1867.

Maurice Henry Searle (1869 – 1921), born about 1868 in London, Middx., registered in St Luke district, June quarter 1869.

In the 1901 census index, in the registration district of Romford, he was aged 31 (no other Searles were with him).

In the 1911 census index, in the registration district of Romford, he was aged 41 and born in London (no other Searles were with him, no marriage has been found).

His death was probably registered in the West Ham district in the December quarter 1921.  He was aged 52.

Alice Searle, born about 1871 in London, Middx., probably registered in Shoreditch district, December quarter 1871.

Florence Jane Searle, born about 1876 in London, Middx., probably registered in Shoreditch district, June quarter 1877.

William J. Searle, born about 1879 in London, Middx.  There is the registration of a William Samuel Searle in the Shoreditch district, March quarter 1880.

Charlotte Searle, born about 1843 at Amwell, Herts. and baptized 25 February 1844 at Hoddesdon.

Zebulun Searle (1845 – 1889), born about 1845 at Amwell, Herts. and baptized 4 January 1846 at Hoddesdon. 

He probably married Rebecca Jefferys in the March quarter 1874 in the Shoreditch district.

In the census of 1881, at 42 North Road, Hornsey, Essex, he was aged 34, a deputy turncock, born at Hoddesdon, Herts.  His wife, Rebecca, was aged 29 and born at Borough.  Their children were James, aged 4 and born in Islington, Margaret aged 6 and born at Hornsey and Charlotte aged 2 and born at Hornsey. 

His death was registered in the Edmonton district in the September quarter 1889.  He was aged 43.

In 1891, in 4 rooms at 2 Park Place, The Walks, Finchley, Rebecca was a widow, aged 39 a laundress (employer), born at Borough.  With her were her children, James aged 14, an errand boy (employee) born at Islington, and Charlotte aged 12 and born at Hornsey.  There was also a boarder, Amy E. Filler.

Zebulun and Rebecca’s children were:

Margaret, born about 1874 at Hornsey.

James, born about 1876 at Islington.

Charlotte, born about 1878 at Hornsey.

Morriss Searle (1850 – 1875), born about April 1850 at Hoddesdon, Herts. and baptized 19 May 1850 at Hoddesdon.  His death was probably registered (as Maurice) in the Ware district in the December quarter 1875.  He was aged 25.

Arthur Searle, baptized 4 July 1852 at Hoddesdon.
