The Family of Roger Hawksley of South Wingfield

He was baptised 2 November 1783 at South Wingfield, a son of Robert Hawksley and Dorothy, formerly Shaw.

He married Elizabeth Smith (X) on 4 March 1805 at South Wingfield, after banns.  They were both of the parish and the witnesses were John Bramley and James Hill. 

Roger was buried 22 September 1811, at South Wingfield aged 28. 

Elizabeth was buried 16 April 1833 at South Wingfield aged 49 (giving a year of birth about 1784). 

Their children were:

Hannah Hawksley (1805 – 1867), baptised 9 December 1805 at South Wingfield.  She married Charles Ludlam 26 August 1833 at South Wingfield, after banns.  They were both of the parish and the witnesses were Thomas Hawksley and Mary Ann Hurt.  In 1841 Charles (shoe m) and Hannah (both aged 35) were sharing a house at South Wingfield with Thomas Hawksley (aged 34) a stockinger and living next door to George and Sarah Hawksley (including Elizabeth).  In 1851 they were both aged 45 and born at South Wingfield.  Charles was a cordwainer.  In 1861 at Church Lane, South Wingfield, Charles was aged 55 a cordwainer with his wife, Hannah, aged 55 and his cousin Charles Booth, single and aged 18, a cordwainer’s apprentice.  All were born in South Wingfield.  Hannah was buried at South Wingfield 22 May 1867 (registered in the Belper district aged 61).  In 1871 in Church Lane, South Wingfield, Charles was a widower aged 65 a master shoemaker employing 1 man with Charles Booth his adopted son and his family, all born in South Wingfield.  In 1881 Charles was aged 75 and a widower.  He was with Charles Booth and his family but the relationship is unclear.  Charles Ludlam’s death was registered in the Belper district in the June quarter 1882, aged 76.  No children appear to have been born to Charles and Hannah.

Thomas (1807 - 1881), baptised 20 February 1807 at South Wingfield.  He appears to have been a stockinger and a factory man.  He, son of Roger, married Rebecca Taylor, daughter of James, 17 May 1842 at Alfreton, a cotton framework knitter who was born in Normanton about 1819. 

In 1851, at South Wingfield, Thomas was aged 44, a factory man born at South Wingfield.  Rebecca, his wife, was aged 32, a cotton framework knitter, born at Normanton, and their children were Roger, aged 8 and Matthew aged 6, both born at South Wingfield.

In 1861 at Wingfield Park, South Wingfield, Thomas was aged 54, a cotton factory hand.  His wife, Rebecca, was aged 42 and their children were Roger aged 18 a coal miner, Matthew aged 16 a coal Miner and Josiah aged 7.  All were born at South Wingfield.

In 1871, at Wingfield Park, South Wingfield, Thomas was aged 64, a finisher at cotton factory.  His wife, Rebecca, was aged 52 a framework knitter.  Both were born at South Wingfield. 

He was buried 20 January 1881, aged 73. 

In 1881 in Church Lane, South Wingfield, Rebecca was a widow aged 62, a framework knitter born at South Normanton.  With her was a lodger, Sarah Mills aged 17 a cotton reeler and born at Brackenfield.  In 1891 at Church Lane, Rebecca was a widow aged 72 and born at South Normanton.  With her was a visitor, Sarah Mills aged 54 and married born at South Mayfield.

Rebecca was buried 22 March 1897 at South Wingfield, aged 78.

Roger, baptised 25 December 1842 at South Wingfield (framework knitter).

Matthew, baptised 19 May 1850 at South Wingfield (SW Park, framework knitter).

Josiah (1854 – 1900), baptised 16 July 1854 at South Wingfield (of SW Park, framework knitter).  He married Albina Prince in the Leeds district in the March quarter 1878.

In 1881, at 6 Culling Street, Wortley in Bramley, Yorks., he was aged 26, a railway engine fireman, born at South Wingfield.  His wife was Albina, aged 25 and born at Leeds.  Their daughter was Teresa, aged 11 months and born at New Wortley, Yorks.  There was also Josiah's brother in law, Thomas E. Prince, aged 19 a railway engine cleaner, born at Leeds.  In 1891 at 19 Masham Street, Armley, Leeds, Josiah was aged 36 a railway engine driver born at Derby, Albinia was aged 35 and born at Leeds.  Their children were Teresa aged 10 and Harry aged 3 both born at Leeds.  Josiah Hawksley’s deathw as registered in the Bramley district in the June quarter 1900.  He was aged 46.  There is no probate entry for him.  In 1901 at 65 Ridge Road, Armley, Leeds, Albinia was a widow aged 46, a green grocer, born in Leeds.  Her children were Teresa aged 20 and Harry aged 13 both born in Wortley, Leeds.

Robert Hawksley (1808 – 1886), baptised 5 October 1808 at South Wingfield.  He (X) was an agricultural labourer and married Catherine Fletcher 2 November 1835 at South Wingfield after banns.  The witnesses were Samuel Richards and Elizabeth Hawksley.

In the 1841 census of Swanwick Robert Oaksley was aged 30-34, an agricultural labourer, Catherine was aged 30-34 and Robert aged 4.  All were born in the county. 

In the 1851 census of Swanwick Robert Hawksley was aged 42 (labourer) and Catherine 40 and born at South Wingfield and Swanwick.  There was also a lodger, Jo Beresforde aged 54, a labourer born at Swanwick.

In 1861 at South Wingfield, Robert was aged 52, a carter of coal, born at South Wingfield.  Catherine was aged 49 (Domestic Duties), born at Alfreton and there was a boarder. Thomas Ghent, aged 20, a clerk colliery also born at Alfreton.

In 1871 at South Wingfield, Robert was 61 a farm labourer born at South Wingfield and Catherine 59, a laundress born at Swanwick.  Their granddaughter, Mary Jane Hawksley, aged 7 was with them and she was born in Nottingham.  There was also a lodger, Richard Oxlade, aged 21 a railway porter born in Westminster.

In 1881, at South Wingfield, Robert was aged 72, a farm labourer, born at South Wingfield and Catherine was aged 70 and born at Swanwick.

Catherine was buried 22 February 1886 at South Wingfield aged 75.  Robert’s death was registered in the Basford district i the June quarter 1886 aged 72.

They had a child

Robert Hawksley (1836 – 1909), baptised 25 August 1836 at South Wingfield (labourer).  In the 1841 census of Swanwick he is at home aged 4 and in the 1851 census of Ripley he is aged 14 and a cordwainer’s apprentice, born at Alfreton.  He moved to Nottingham and married Mary Hickling in 1855.  In 1861 he cannot be found.  In 1871 at 7 Newbridge Street, St Peters, Nottingham, Robert was aged 34, a cordwainer born at South Wingfield. His wife, Mary, was aged 37 a lace hand.  Their children were George aged 14 an errand boy, Catherine aged 9, Robert aged 4 Edward aged 9 months.  All were born in Nottingham.  In 1881, at 11 Rushton Terrace, St Anne’s, Nottingham, Robert was aged 44 a cordwainer born in South Wingfield, his wife, Mary, was aged 47 a lace hand and their children were George aged 24 a machine hand, Mary J. aged 17 a lace warehouse hand, Robert aged 14 a brush maker, Edward aged 10, William F. Aged 7 and John H aged 4.  All were born in Nottingham.  In 1891, at 4 Carver Street, Radford, Robert was aged 54 a ‘C and Winder (Lace)’ but probably cordwainer, born at South Wingfield.  His wife, Mary, was aged 57 a lace hand, and their children were George aged 34 a bill poster, William F. Aged 17 a thread winder (lace) and John H. aged 14 a tobacco maker, all born in Nottingham.  In 1901 at 18 Mabel Terrace, Birkin Avenue, Radford, Robert was 66 a cordwainer (boot trade) born at South Wingfield.  His wife, Mary J. was aged 67 and his children were William F. married aged 27, a photographer working on own account at home and John H. aged 27 a lace maker.  All were born in Nottingham.  Robert’s death was registered in the Nottingham district in the December quarter 1909 aged 73 and Mary Jane’s was registered in the same district in the June quarter 1909 aged 75.  Their children were

Mary Jane Hawksley, 1864.  In 1871 she was with her grandparents, Robert and Catherine in South Wingfield.

Robert Hawksley, born 1866.  He married Eliza Hall, December 1888 in Nottingham.

Their children were

William Harry Hawksley, born 1885 in Nottingham.  He was killed in action in the army.

Zillah Hawksley, born 1890 in Nottingham and named after Eliza's mother and grandmother).  She married Jim Goodson.

Ernest Hawksley, born 1893 in Nottingham.  He married Minnie Wheatley.

Robert Hawksley, born 1895 in Stavely.  He married first Elsie Kay and secondly Annie Bonsall.

William Fletcher Hawksley, birth registered in the September quarter 1873 in the Nottingham district, and was baptised at St Peter’s, Nottingham, 12 July 1874, a son of Robert and Mary of Newbridge Street.  He married Marian Marie Elizabeth Hall at St Paul’s Hyson Green 17 November 1897 in the December quarter 1897 in the Nottingham district.  In 1901 he is with his parents.  In 1901 in 4 rooms in Church Street, Melbourne, Derbys, Marion M Hawksley , married aged 26, a china dealer born Nottingham is on her own,  After 1901 they disappear. 

Edward Hawksley, born about 1871 and baptised 12 July 1874 at St Peter’s, Nottingham, a son of Robert and Mary of New Bridge Street.  He married Harriette Gamble6.  In 1891 at 1 Pine Street, Radford, Edward was aged 22 a brush maker, and Harriett was aged 21 a lace clipper.  Both were born in Nottingham.  In 1901 at 11 Cobden Street, Nottingham, Edward was aged 30 a coal miner, Harriett his wife was aged 28 and their children were Eva aged 9, Hilda aged 7, Edward aged 5, and Elsie aged 2 All were born at Radford, except the parents who were born in Nottingham.  In 1911 at 15 Stansfield Street, Radford in 5 rooms, Edward was aged 40 a coal miner hewer and born in Nottingham St Mary’s and Harriet his wife was aged 38 a lace hand, born in Lenton.  They had been married for 20 years and had had 6 children one of whom had died.  Their children were Eva aged 19 a cardboard box maker, Hilda aged 17 a tobacco machine feeder, Edward aged 15 a post boy for a newspaper seller, Elsie aged 12 and Clara aged 7.  All were born in Lenton.  Also with them was a boarder, Florrie Ledgate aged 25 a tobacco packer born in Hyson Green.  Their children were

John Henry Hawksley (1876 – 1956), birth registered in the Nottingham district in the September quarter 1876, only possibility in Nottingham 1870 – 1883) (born 1877).  He married Nellie Ellen E. Pepper (Helen) in the Nottingham district in the March quarter 1902.  In 1911, at 15 Collison Terrace, Hyson Green, Nottingham, John Henry was aged 34 a lacemaker (Levers Branch) born in Nottingham, Nellie Euphemia aged 31 and born at Ipswich.  They had been married for 9 years and had had 4 children, two of whom had died.  Their children were Doris Mary aged 5 and George Henry aged 3 months, both born in Hyson Green.  There was also a lodger, a widower, Tomas Gladwin, aged 54 a lacemaker (Levers Branch) and born at Beeston.  In 1939 in the Nottingham CB, John Henry (birth year 1876) was with Nellie (birth year 1880) and 3 others whose records are closed.  John Henry‘s death was registered in the Nottingham district in the December quarter 1956 aged 80.  Nellie died 24 September 1962 at Sherwood Hospital and administration was granted 19 December 1962 to Herbert Hawksley, saw mill labourer.  She was of 101 Bateman Street, Hyson Green and left £704.4s.

George Hawksley (1810 - 1896), baptised 15 November 1810 at South Wingfield. 

In 1851, at South Wingfield, George was aged 40 a cotton framework knitter, his wife, Mary Ann was aged 34 and their children were Thirza, aged 12, Charles, aged 6, Robert aged 4 and Hannah aged 1 month.  There was also Ferdinand Taylor, George's brother in law, aged 28 and a cotton framework knitter.  (There was also a lodger.)  All were born at South Wingfield.

In 1861 in Church Lane, South Wingfield, George was aged 51 a framework knitter and parish clerk.  Mary Ann his wife was aged 44 and their children were Charles aged 17 an engineer colliery, Robert aged 14 a coal miner, Hannah aged 10 and Walter aged 4.  All were born in South Wingfield.

In 1864 he was parish clerk (Thirza's marriage).

In 1871 in Church Lane, South Wingfield, George was aged 60 and parish clerk.  His wife, Mary Ann was aged 55 and their children were Robert aged 24 a coal miner, Dorothy Ann aged 17 a cotton factory hand, Walter aged 14 a coal miner and Paience aged 7. All were born at South Wingfield.

In 1881, at Church Lane, South Wingfield, he was aged 71, a …. Clerk and born at South Wingfield.  His wife, Mary Ann was aged 64, a housewife and born at South Wingfield.  With them was their unmarried son, Walter, aged 23, a coal miner, born at South Wingfield.

In 1891, in 4 rooms in South Wingfield but not known (!), George was aged 80 church parish sexton, Mary Ann his wife was aged 74 and Walter their son was aged 34 and a coal miner.  All were born at South Wingfield.

In Kelly's Directory 1891 he was Parish Clerk of South Wingfield.

He was buried 29 July 1896 at South Wingfield aged 85 and was a cotton framework knitter, and Clerk of the Parish.  He married Mary Ann Taylor and had children

Thirza Hawksley, baptised 2 April 1850 at South Wingfield (framework knitter) and married (as Thirza Taylor Hawksley) Charles Thomas Cooke, 26 January 1863 at South Wingfield, after banns.  He was aged 20, a miner, of South Wingfield, a son of. Thomas, an engineer.  She was of full age and a daughter of George, clerk of this parish.  The witnesses were George Cooke and Sarah Ann Dunn.

Charles Hawksley, baptised 2 April 1850 at South Wingfield (framework knitter) but born about 1845.

Robert Hawksley, baptised 2 April 1850 at South Wingfield (framework knitter) but born about 1846.  He probably married Ann and in 1881 was living at Church Lane, South Wingfield, aged 34 and a grocer and coal miner, born at South Wingfield.  Ann, his wife, was aged 30 and born at Crich.  Their children were Arthur aged 7 and Charles, aged 5, both born at South Wingfield.  In Kellys Directory, 1891, pp 329-30, he was listed as a shopkeeper.

Herbert Hawksley (1876 - 1878), baptised 26 November 1876 at South Wingfield (collier).  He was buried 25 February 1878 at South Wingfield, an infant.

Frederick Hawksley (1850 - 1850), baptised 2 April 1850 at South Wingfield (framework knitter) and buried 5 April 1850.

Hannah Hawksley, baptised 20 April 1851 at South Wingfield (framework knitter) (born end of February3).

Dorothy Ann Hawksley, baptised 19 July 1857 at South Wingfield (framework knitter).  She probably had an illegitimate daughter

Georgiana Mary Ann Hawksley, baptised 26 September 1875 at South Wingfield. (of Dorothy Ann).

Walter Hawksley, baptised 19 July 1857 at South Wingfield (framework knitter). 

In 1881 and in 1891, he was at home with his parents, unmarried, aged 23, and 34 and a coal miner born at South Wingfield.  In 1901 he was single and a lodger aged 46 ain Park Street, Alfreton, a coal minor below (hewer) and born in South Wingfield.  In 1911 he was single aged 58, an agricultural labourer, born at South Wingfield.  The record was extracted from the Police Returns, with an address for the Registrar of Town Hall Ripley.
