I am grateful to Judy Marsh for some of the information on this page.
Robert George Pettit was born 18 September 1866, (registration was the December quarter in the Thingoe district) and baptised 4 November 1866, late Burch, husbandman, at Hargrave, a son of John Pettit and Eliza formerly Birch.
Robert was found in the 1881 census with his brother Herbert (Hubbard) Pettit, at Tuffields Farm, Whepstead, Suffolk, and uncle, Alfred Pettit. In about 1891 he emigrated to Australia with his brothers, Herbert and Samuel. Samuel returned to England after a few years but Herbert and Robert stayed out there. Robert may have gone out to Western Australia, returning to Victoria where he managed a farm at Berwick. He married Jane Nixon in 1904 and is thought to have had two daughters, one named Maude.
