Lillie Ethel Pettit was born 1877/8, at Hargrave, daughter of John Pettit and Eliza formerly Birch. Her birth, as Lillie Ethel Pettitt, was registered in the registration distict of Thingoe in the March quarter (4a 546) 1878. Evidence from the censuses and Eliza’s obituary suggest that she was known as Ethel or Et.
In the 1881 census of Knowles Green, Hargrave, she is with her uncle Jeremiah Birch and the rest of her family, as Ethel aged 3,born at Hargrave.
In the census for 1891 of Knowles Green Farm, Hargrave, she is with the family, as Lillie E. aged 13, born at Hargrave.
In the 1901 census of The Rectory, Whitchurch, Oxon, in the household of Henry Trotter, a Church of England clergyman, aged 56 and born at Wimbledon, Lily E. Pettit, aged 25, was a house maid (domestic), and born at Hargrave.
As Lily Ethel Pettit she married Herbert Edward Veal on 24 October 1915 at All Saints, Clapton, after banns. He was a commissioner, aged 36, of 185 Powerscroft Road, Clapton, a son of William Veal (deceased), a farmer. Ethel was aged 37, also of 185 Powerscroft Road, Clapton, a daughter of John Pettit (deceased), a farmer. The witnesses were Herbert Samuel Francis and Eliza Pettit. (The address is that of the tobacconists run by Herbert Samuel Francis and Jessie.)
Her death (Lily E Veal) was registered in the Hackney district in the March quarter 1927. She was aged 49.
Herbert appears to have married again though the marriage has not been found.
In 1939 (register) at 116 Maudfield Road, Tottenham, Herbert E Veal was a commissioner with a date of birth 29 August 1879 and married. With him was Racheal Veal also married with a date of birth 7 September 1889, and Jessie Pettengell, later Veal, date of birth 10 March 1915 a shop assistant [she married Edward].
Lily and Herbert’s child was:
Edward William Veal. His birth was
registered June quarter 1920 in the Hackney district. He married Jessie Peltengell
(Pettengell) in the Hackney district in the September
quarter 1941. In the electoral register
2002-2014 he was aged 65+ and lived at 41 Darfield
Road, Guilford. He died 12 April 2002
(registered in the West Surrey district with a date of birth of 22 April 1920)
and probate was granted 7 June 2002 at Winchester. Jessie died in the March quarter 2003 in the
East Surrey district with a date of birth of 10 March 1915 (her birth
registration appears to be missing).
