He was born 16 September 1899, a son of Ernest Albert Pettit and Annie formerly Challis.
In 1911 he was living with his parents, aged 11 and born at Hargrave.
He became a chief petty officer in the Navy and lived (and died) at Gosport. He joined up when he was only 16, fought in the battle of Jutland during WW1 and during the second was in America, training American service men. He married Mary Eveline Feasey (birth registered in the Edmonton district in the December quarter 1909, and marriage registered Edmonton 3a 839, March quarter 1933). In 1911 Mary Eveline Feasey was aged 1, born in Tottenham and was with her parents (house painter) and their family living in Tottenham.
George and Mary had one child, Geoffrey George. During the Second World War, Mary and Geoffrey lived at the bungalow in Newmarket to escape the bombing at Gosport.
In the 1939 register, Mary E Pettit with a birth date of 1 November 1909 was living in Newmarket RD with Ernest A. Pettit, one other person and another whose record is closed. The conclusion is that Mary Eveline and Geoffrey George Pettit were living with Ernest Albert and Annie Pettit at their bungalow in Newmarket. George Pettit has not been found in the 1939 register.
Mary died in 1978 (registered in the March quarter 1978 and in the Portsmouth district with a date of birth 1 November 1909) and was cremated.
George died later in 1978 and was buried at sea (? Perhaps his ashes were scattered at sea as his will directed that he should be cremated). His will was dated 9 December 1975. He appointed his wife Mary Eveline as his sole executrix and beneficiary unless she predeceased him when his son Geoffrey George Pettit would take her place. If Geoffrey did not survive George then his estate was left to two trustees, his solicitor and his daughter-in-law for the benefit of his daughter-in-law and their children, in equal shares. Probate of his will was granted at Winchester, 4 May 1978 to Geoffrey George Pettit, of 12 Weymouth Avenue Gosport the sole executor (Mary Eveline Pettit having predeceased her husband). George was of 38 Rothesay Road, Gosport and died 23 February 1978. His effects were £11,389.52 gross and £11,192.32 net.
George and Mary’s son was:
Geoffrey George Pettit (1934 – 2003), born 1 March 1934 and died Saturday 12 July 2003 of a massive stroke which he suffered on Wednesday 9 July. He was aged 69. His funeral was held at St Thomas, Gosport, 18 July 2003 at 1.30 pm. Geoffrey married in the Gosport district in the September quarter 1964.
