The Family of William Hedley Johnson of Fulstow, and Manitoba, Canada

William Hedley Johnson was born October 1875 and baptised 28 November 1875 at Louth, a son of Rev. Alexander Johnson and his first wife, Hannah formerly Stephenson.  His birth was registered in the Louth district in the December quarter 1875. 

 

In the 1881 census he was living at home aged 5. 

 

He was educated at De Aston School, Market Rasen, Lincs.  He was aged 13 and admitted 2 Feb 1889 and left at Easter 1891. 

 

In the 1891 census he was living at home, aged 15.

 

He emigrated to Canada, apparently arriving in 1891 and married Annie Durham (from Tavistock, Devon) whom he met in Manitoba.  The marriage was 29 May 1902 at Ochre River, Manitoba.

 

In the 1911 census of Ochre River, Dauphin, Manitoba, William H Johnson was aged 35 and born in October 1875.  He arrived in Canada in 1891 and was born in England and of English nationality.  His religion was Church of England (C of E).  There was other information in the census but it was either illegible or unintelligible.  With him was his wife, Annie, born November 1875 in England aged 35, who arrived in Canada in 1900, and was of Canadian nationality and was C of E.  There were also 7 children, all born in Manitoba; Mary E born December 1902 aged 9, William Leslie born February 1905 aged 6, Annie Winifred born January? 1906 aged 5, Hilda Blanche born March 1907 aged 4, Alexandra Venning born March 1908 aged 3, John Durham born February 1910 aged 1 and Bessie Langford born April 1911.

 

In the 1916 census of Manitoba, at Ochre River, Dauphin, William Johnson was aged 41 and arrived in Canada in 1890 (not possible as he was in England then).  His wife, Annie, was aged 41 and their children were Mary aged 14, William Leslie aged 12, Annie aged 11, Blanche aged 10, Alexandra aged 9, Jack aged 7, Bessie aged 6, Harry aged 5, Dorothy aged 4, Frederick aged 2 or 3 and Bernice aged 1.  With them was a nurse and Fred Durham, William’s brother-in-law.

 

William and Annie originally lived at Ochre River, Manitoba and then moved to Kirkland Lake when he became a shift boss at the Lake Shore mill.  They had 15 children of whom 11 lived to adulthood.

 

William and Annie’s children were:

Mary Eleanor Johnson, born 26 December 1902 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1911 she was at home aged 9, and in 1916 was aged 14.

William Leslie Johnson, born 1 February 1905 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1911 he was at home aged 6 and in 1916 was aged 12.

Annie Winnifred Johnson, born 28 January 1906 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1911 she was at home aged 5 and in 1916 she was aged 11.

Hilda Blanche Johnson, born 6 March 1907 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1911 she was at home aged 4 and in 1916 she was aged 10.

Alexandra Venning Johnson, born 26 February 1908 Ochre River, Manitoba (female, mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1911 she was aged 3 and in 1916 she was aged 9. 

John ‘Jack’ Durham Johnson, born 4 March 1910 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham, but indexed as ‘Ducharm’).  In 1911 he was at home and was aged 1 and in 1916 he was aged 7.

Bessie Langford Johnson, born 2 April 1911 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1911 she was at home aged _  months and in 1916 she was aged 6.

Harry Douglas Johnson, born 29 April 1912 Ochre River, Manitoba (mother Annie formerly Durham).  In 1916 he was at home and aged 5.

Dorothy Johnson, born about 1912 in Manitoba.  In 1916 she was at home and aged 4.

She married Frederick Raymond Prier (Lake Shore mine accountant 1927 – 1968, born Charlton Ontario 1909) in 1931.  Their long time address was a mine house, 128 Government Road West, Kirkland Lake. 

Frederick Johnson, born about 1913 or 1914 in Manitoba.  In 1916 he was at home aged 2 or 3.

Bernice Johnson, born about 1915 in Manitoba.  In 1916 she was at home aged 1.

Eve Johnson

James Kitchener Johnson, died night of 18/19 July 1944.  He was a navigator (J/88546, RCAF) and his plane, a Lancaster III PB245-PG-Z 619 squadron, was shot down and crashed at Ussy-sur-Marne, where he and the rest of the crew are buried in the cemetery.
