Emma Harnack formerly Johnson

Her birth was registered in the September quarter of 1873 in the Louth district. She was baptised 20 August 1873 at Louth, a daughter of Alexander Johnson and Hannah formerly Stevenson.

In the 1881 census she was living at home aged 7.

 

In the 1901 census of The Galtress (?), Market Place, Easingwold, there is an Emma Johnson, single, aged 27 and born at Louth, a governess in the household of a solicitor, F.I.H. Robinson, aged 42 and born at Easingwold.

 

In the September quarter 1902 in the Louth district, Emma married Frederick William Harnack.  He was apparently born in the Islington district in the June quarter 1874.

 

In 1905 she was named in Alexander’s will as Emma Harnack.

 

In 1911 at 95 Springfield Road, Chelmsford, Emma was aged 37 and born at Louth, Frederick William was aged 36, an actuarial clerk (life assurance) and born at Islington, London.  They had been married for 8 years and had had one child.  Waldo was aged 6 and born at Springfield, Chelsford.  Frederick was an actuarial clerk, and living at 95 (since renumbered 413) Springfield Road, Chelmsford.

 

In the 1939 register at 95 Springfield Road, Chelmsford, Frederick W. Harnack was a director, life insurance company, with a date of birth of 12 April 1874 and Emma Harnack had a date of birth of 12 July 1873.

 

Emma died in the Chelmsford district in the March quarter 1943.  She was aged 69.

 

Frederick William Harnack died in the Newton Abbot district in the December quarter 1948.  He was aged 74.  He died 11 December 1948 and was of Chapple, Bovey Tracey.  Probate was granted 18 March 1949 to Edward Coleman Simmons and Edward Henry Gordon Simmons solicitors.  His effects were £5,392.1s.11d.

 

Emma and Frederick’s only child was

Waldo Harnack (1904 – 1942), born 29 December 1904 at Springfield, Chelmsford), birth registered in the December quarter 1904 in the Chelmsford district.

He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford.

He is the same person as the Waldo Harnack who was educated at Trent College, Long Eaton (mid-way between Derby and Nottingham), where he was a cadet lance-corporal in the junior division of the OTC.  He was a second lieutenant (34498) in the 54th (East Anglian) Divisional Train of the Royal Army Service Corps.  He died in Dutch Borneo in 1942 (probably as a Japanese prisoner of war and news of his death did not reach home until March 1946) and there is a monumental inscription to him in the churchyard of All Saints, Springfield, Chelmsford.  He was BSc (London), FRCS.

He is commemorated on the roll of honour, Singapore Memorial.  This states that he was 2nd Lieutenant 34498 General List seconded to 2nd Bn 15th Punjab Regiment died 20 March 1942 aged 38.  He was a son of Frederick William and Emma Harnack and husband of Kathleen Margaret Harnack, of Rochester, Kent, BSc Eng. (Lond) Column 114.

He married 1 November 1938 in the Medway district to Kathleen Margaret Harvey (born 1906 and died 19 December 1997 and who married secondly Frederick William Clifton, Surrey South West district in the March quarter 195345).  Waldo and Kathleen had a son born 19 September 1940 at Kuching, Sarawak who survived for only a few hours.  Waldo’s estate was £2,006.15s.9d to Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China.
