The Family of Ann Dawse formerly Johnson of Wombwell

Ann Johnson was baptised 21 August 1836 at Pentrich, a daughter of Edward Johnson and his first wife, Rebecca formerly Pickering.

In 1841 she was at home with her parents, aged 9.  This suggests a birth about 1832.  She was not with her father in 1851.

By searching for marriages of 'Ann Johnson' at freebmd.rootsweb.com, identifying the possible spouses and then looking in the 1881 census at www.familysearch.org under her married name, a likely Ann was identified at Wombwell, Yorks, with an appropriate place of birth and age.  As Ann Dawse she was living at 57 Wombwell Main, Wombwell, aged 49 and born at Codnor Parks (sic), Derbys, the wife of Robert Dawse, with children William and Alexander.  The use of the name Alexander strongly suggests that she was the daughter of Edward and a partial transcription of her entry in the marriage register of Pentrich gives her father as Edward.

Ann Johnson (aged 19 and a daughter of Edward) married Robert Daws (aged 24, bachelor and son of Samuel Daws) 25 December 1849 at St Matthew, Pentrich.

In 1851, at Staveley, Robert Dawes (indexed as Daives) was aged 25 a coal miner.  His wife, A. was aged 19 and their child M. was aged 2 months.  All were born at Alfreton.

In 1861, at Wombwell Main, Robert Daws was aged 35 and his wife Ann was aged 29, both born at Alfreton.  Their children were George aged 8 and Mary aged 5 both born at Stavely and William aged 1 born at Woolley Edge, Yorks.

In 1871 at 57 Wombwell Main, Robert was aged 45 a miner born at Alfreton, his wife Ann was aged 39 and born at Codnor Park, George was aged 17 a butcher born at Stavely, Mary aged 15 and born at Stavely and William aged 11 born at Woolley.

In 1881, at 57 Wombwell Main, Robert was aged 55 a coal miner born at Alfreton.  His wife, Ann, was aged 49 and born at Codnor Park.  Their children were William aged 21 a butcher born at Woolley and Alexander aged 9 and born at Wombwell Main.  Also with them were their married daughter Mary aged 25 born at Stavely and their son-in-law Amaziah P. Taylor aged 29 a coal miner born at Wasbro’ (but probably Worsborough) and their children Agnes D aged 2 and Maria aged 1 both born in Wombwell Main.  They have not been found after 1881.

They and their family may have emigrated to America for in June 2016 Margaret Middleton found a photo of a grave in North Union Cemetery, Parke County, Indiana on the internet for Robert and Anna Dawes.  It records that Anna’s birth and death dates are 15 July 1831 and 1 July 1899, whilst Robert’s are 5 February 1826 and 15 January 1905.  When they married Ann and Robert were 5 years apart in age and so they are, on this memorial.

Ann and Robert’s children were:

Maria Daws (1851 – 1854), born about January 1851 at Alfreton.  Her birth was registered in the Alfreton sub-district in the March quarter 1851 and her death was registered in the Chesterfield district (includes Staveley) in the December quarter 1854.

George Daws, born about 1852 at Staveley and baptised at Staveley 19 June 1853, a son of Robert and Ann.  He married Betsy Smalley in the Barnsley district in the December quarter 1875.  In 1881 at 36 Grace Street, Barnsley, he was aged 27 a butcher and born in Derbyshire.  His wife, Betsy was aged 28 and born in Darfield.  Thir children were Ellen aged 5 born in Wombwell and William Henry aged 3 and born in Darton.  They have not been found after 1881.  George and Betsy’s children were:

Ellen Daws, born about 1875 at Wombwell.

William Henry Daws, born about 1877 at Darton.

Mary Daws, born about 1855 at Staveley and baptised at Staveley 9 September 1855, a daughter of Robert and Ann.  Mary Dawes (aged 22 a spinster of Hoyland, father Robert a collier) married Amaziah Pacey Taylor (aged 26 a bachelor of Hoyland, father Martin a collier – his baptism 28 September 1851 at Worsborough, Yorks, Martin and Mary, a collier) 29 April 1878 in Wath upon Dearne by banns. The witnesses were William Dawes and John Thomas.  They have not been found after 1881.  Amaziah and Mary’s children were:

Agnes D. Taylor, born about 1878 at Wombwell Main.

Maria Taylor, born about 1879 at Wombwell Main.

William Daws, born about 1859 at Woolley Edge, Yorks and baptised 1 April 1860 at Woolley, a son of Robert and Ann.
