The Family of Robert Hawksley of South Wingfield and Shirland

He was born 1792-3 at South Wingfield, but his baptism is missing from the South Wingfield register.  He married Rebecca Smith 14 February 1820 at South Wingfield, after banns.  They were both of the parish.  The witnesses were William Garrett and Elizabeth Lane (X).

Rebecca Hawksley’s burial was at Shirland, 25 March 1835.  She was aged 34.

In 1841 at Shirland, Robert was aged 45 a framework knitter, Rebecca was aged 18 a framework knitter, Lydia was aged 11 and Job was aged 2 months.  All were born in the county.

In 1851, in Mill Lane, Shirland, Robert was a widower aged 58, a framework knitter born at South Wingfield.  With him was his grandson Job Rodger Hawksley aged 10 and born at Shirland.

In 1861 in Shirland Village, Robert was a widower aged 67 a cotton framework knitter born at South Wingfield.  With him was his son Emmanuel aged 35 an agricultural labourer born at South Wingfield.  Emmanuel’s wife was Emily aged 28 and born at Crich and Robert’s grandchildren were Eliza aged 8 and James aged 7 months, both born at Shirland.

In 1871 in Shirland Village, Robert was a widower aged 78 a framework knitter born at South Wingfield.  His son, Emmanuel was aged 46 a farm labourer and born at Shirland.  Robert’s grandchildren were James aged 10, Frank A. aged 7 and Albert aged 4, all born at Shirland.

Robert’s burial, as Hawesley, was 23 April 1875 at Shirland.  He was aged 84.

Rebecca Hawksley, born about 1823.  She probably had an illegitimate son:

Job Hawksley, birth registered in the Ashover sub-district in the March quarter 1841.  In 1851 he was with his grandfather.  After this there seems to be nothing in the records.

Emmanuel Hawksley, born about 1826-7.  In 1841 he was a man servant aged 14 in the household of farmer John Clay in Shirland.  In 1851 he was a house servant aged 24 and born in South Wingfield in the household of Hannah Shelley (Lady).  He probably married Emily Walker in the December quarter 1853 in the Sheffield district.  In 1861 and 1871 he and his family were with his father in Shirland.  In 1881 at New Building Land, Shirland, Emmanuel was aged 55 an agricultural labourer born in Shirland.  His wife, Emily, was aged 48 and born in Crich.  Their children were James aged 20 a coal miner, Amos aged 18 a pupil teacher, Emanuel aged 7 and Uriah W. aged 3.  All were born in Shirland.  In 1891 in Shirland Village, Emmanuel was aged 64 a colliery labourer born in Shirland.  Emily, his wife, was aged 58 and born in Crich.  Their child was Uriah W. aged 13 born in Shirland.  In 1901 Emmanuel was aged 73 a farm labourer born in Shirland and Emily was aged 68 and born in Crich.  Emmanuel’s death was registered in the Chesterfield district in the December quarter 1904 aged 77 (birth year of 1827/7).  In 1911 on her own in 8 rooms at The Wharf, Shardlow, Derbys, Emily Hawksley was a widow aged 79 and born in Crich.  Her death was registered in the Shardlow district in the June quarter 1916 aged 83.  Emmanuel and Emily’s children were
