The Family of Peter Elliott of Ironville

He was born around 1821 at Ironville, a son of William Elliott and Elizabeth formerly Barlow.

In 1841 he was at home with his parents aged 15–19 and born in the county.

He married Ann Dufty in the Belper district in the June quarter 1843.  Ann was baptised at Annesley, Notts. 14 January 1821 a daughter of Thomas and Anne Dufty.

 

In 1851, in Victoria Street, Ironville, Peter was aged 29, an iron moulder, born in Ironville.  His wife, Ann, was aged 30, a dress maker born in Annesley.  Their children were James W. aged 6 and Peter aged 2, both born in Ironville.

 

In 1861, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville, Peter was aged 39, an iron moulder, born at Ironville and his wife Ann was aged 40 and born at Annesley Woodhouse, Notts. Their children were James, aged 16, a pupil teacher, Peter aged 12, a labourer ironworks, Harriet aged 9, Fanny aged 5 and William aged 1, all born at Ironville.

In 1871, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville, Peter was aged 49, a moulder, born at Ironville. His wife, Ann, was aged 51, a dressmaker and born at Annesley W. Notts. and their children were Peter, aged 22, a labourer in iron, Harriet, aged 19, a dressmaker and Fanny, aged 15, a pupil teacher, all born at Ironville.

There is a suitable death entry for Peter Elliott in the Belper district in the September quarter 1873.  He was aged 51.

In 1881, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville (IGI has Alfreton), Ann was a widow, aged 61 and born at Annesley, Notts. With her were her children Peter, aged 32, a labourer Ironworks, and Fanny aged 25 a private governess (teacher), both born at Ironville.

In 1891, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville, Ann was a widow aged 70 and born at Annesley Woodhouse, Notts. Her unmarried son, Peter, was aged 42, an iron shearer, born at Ironville.

Peter and Ann's children were:

  1. James William, born about 1844 at Ironville. In 1861 he was living at home with his parents, aged 16, a pupil teacher born at Ironville.  He married Maria E. Clarke in the Belper district in the December quarter 1866.  In 1881, at National Schools, Burnham, Bucks, he was aged 36, a certificated schoolmaster born at Ironville Alfreton. His wife, Maria Elizabeth, was aged 35 a certificated schoolmistress, born in Longford County, Ireland. In 1891, at Abby School, Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, James W was aged 46, a school master (elementary) and born at Ironville.  Maria E. was aged 45 a school mistress born in Ireland and their children were Emma E aged 15 a pupil teacher born in Swanwick, Mary L aged 14 a monitress born in Swanwick, Harriet E aged 8 born in Burnham Bucks., James P. Aged 3 and born in Ramsey, Hunts. and Francis A aged 1 and also born in Ramsey Hunts.  Their children were William Henry, aged 13, born at Chesterfield, Emma Edith, aged 5 and Mary Louise, aged 4, both born at Swanwick Alfreton. There was also a general domestic servant.  In 1901 in High Street, Ramsey, Hunts, James W was aged 56, a retired school master born at Ironville.  His wife, Maria E. was aged 55 and Head Mistress Board School born in Ireland.  Their children were Emma E aged 25 presumably mistress (ditto marks!) born at Swanwick, James P. aged 13 born at Ramsey, Hunts., Harriet E aged 18 born at Burnham, Bucks. and Francis A. aged 11 born at Ramsey, Hunts.  In 1911, at 22, Hartford Road, Huntingdon, in 7 rooms, James William was aged 66 a retired school master elementary born in Ironville, Maria Elizabeth, his wife, was aged 64, a retired school mistress, born at Longford, co. Longford.  They had been married 44 years and had had nine children of whom three had died.  With them was their child Harriet Ethel, aged 28 and born at Burnham, Bucks.  Maria E. Elliott’s death was registered in the Huntingdon district in the December quarter 1911.  She was aged 66.  James W. Elliott’s death could have been registered in the West Ham district in the March quarter 1919.  He was aged 74.  James and Maria's children were

1.      William Henry Elliott, born about 1867 at Chesterfield (there are two registrations for William Henry in the Chesterfield district in 1867, one in the March quarter and the other in the September quarter).

2.      Emma Edith Elliott, born about 1875 at Swanwick Alfreton (registered in the Belper district in the September quarter 1875).

3.      Mary Louise Elliott, born about 1876 at Swanwick Alfreton (registered as Mary Louisa in the Belper district in the September quarter 1876).  She may have married Reginald Lucas in the West Ham district in the June quarter 1901.  There is a May (sic) Louise with Reginald Lucas in the Hammersmith, Fulham district in the 1911 census aged 38.

4.      Harriet Ethel Elliott, born about 1882 at Burnham, Bucks (registered in the Eton district in the December quarter 1882).  A snippet in the Huntingdon Herald for 5 January 1906 refers to the theft of a bicycle worth £10 the property of Harriet Ethel Elliott at Huntingdon on 18 December 1905.

5.      James Peter Elliott, born about 1887 at Ramsey, Hunts (registered in the Huntingdon district in the September quarter 1887).

6.      Francis Arthur Elliott, born about 1889 at Ramsey, Hunts (registered in the Huntingdon district in the December quarter 1889).

  1. Peter, born about 1846 at Ironville. In 1861 he was at home with his parents, aged 12, a labourer ironworks, born at Ironville. In 1871 he was at home with his parents, unmarried, aged 22, a labourer in iron and born at Ironville. In 1881 he was at home with his mother, unmarried, aged 32, a labourer Ironworks, and born at Ironville. In 1891 he was at home with his mother, unmarried, aged 42, an iron shearer, born at Ironville.  He married Susannah Grace Brindley in the Gloucester district in the September quarter 1892.  In 1901, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville, in 4 rooms, Peter was aged 52, an ironworks shearer born in Ironville.  His wife, Susannah G. was aged 36 and born in Codnor Park.  In 1911, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville, Peter was aged 62 an iron moulder labourer, born in Ironville.  Susannah Grace his wife was aged 46 and born at Codnor.  They had been married for 18 years and had no children.  He was buried in the churchyard at Ironville and his monumental inscription on kerb stones reads “Peter Elliott died July 24 1912 aged 64 years.”  Administration of his estate was granted at Derby 20 August 1912 to Susannah Grace Elliott, widow, and his effects were £345.6s.2d. 
  2. Harriet, born about 1851 at Ironville. In 1861 she was living at home with her parents, aged 9 and born at Ironville. In 1871 she was living at home with her parents, aged 19, a dressmaker and born at Ironville. She married Thomas Parkin Cotterill in the June quarter 1871 in the Belper district. In 1881, at 25 Victoria Street, Ironville, (her mother was at 27 Victoria Street), she was aged 29 and born at Ironville. Her husband, Thomas P. was aged 31 and born at Butterley Park, a labourer at Ironworks. Their children were Mary P aged 8, and Thomas, aged 5 months, both born at Ironville. In the 1901 index, living in Hucknall under Huthwaite, Thomas was aged 51, a … ironworks and born at Butterley Park and Harriot was aged 49 and born at Ironville.  In 1891, at 38 Victoria Street (end of terrace at corner with Tank Street) Thomas P. Cotterill was 41 aa plate iron shearer born in Pentrich.  Harriett his wife was aged 39 and born in Ironville.  Their children were Mary P Cotterill a dressmaker aged 18 and Thomas P Cotterill aged 10 and both were born in Ironville.  In 1901 visiting his son and daughter, (Thomas P. was a lodger with his sister Mary) in Main Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite, Thomas was aged 51, a shearer ironworks and born at Butterley Park and Harriot was aged 49 and born at Ironville.  In 1911, at 27 Victoria Street, Ironville, in 4 rooms, Thomas was aged 61 a driller in colliery wagon works, born in Butterley Park.  His wife, Harriett was aged 59 and born in Ironville.  They had been married for 39 years and had had 9 children of whom 7 had died.  Thomas P Cottterill’s death was probably registered in the Belper district in the June quarter 1925.  He was aged 75.  Harriet Cotterill’s death was probably registered in the Chesterfield district in the March quarter 1928.  She was aged 76.  Thomas and Harriet's children were:

1.      William Parkin Cotterill (1871 - 1871), born 1871 (September quarter, Belper), and died 1871 (Cottrill, aged 0, December quarter, Belper district).

2.      Mary Parkin Cotterill (1873 – 1946), born 1873 at Ironville and registered in the Alfreton sub-district (June quarter, Belper).  She married Henry Stevens 25 December 1894 at Christchurch, Ironville, after banns.  She was a spinster aged 21 of Ironville, a daughter of Thomas Parkin Cotterill, a shearer.  Henry was a bachelor aged 23 a grocer of Belper, a son of Joseph Stevens, deceased.  The witnesses were Joseph Stevens, Emma Edith Elliott, Thomas Parkin Cotterill and Florence Stevens.  In 1901, in Main Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite, she was aged 28 and born in Ironville,  Her husband, Henry, was aged 30 and was a grocer’s manager, working at home, born at Selston.  Their children were Gladys M. aged 5 and born in Beeston, Notts., and Thomas E aged 3 born at Ironville.  Her brother Thomas was also lodging with them and her parents were visiting.  In 1911, in six rooms at 11 Holme Road, Stonegravels, Chesterfield, Henry was aged 40, a traveller for a confectioner and born in Selston.  Mary his wife was aged 38 and born at Codnor Park.  They had been married for 16 years and had had 7 children of whom 3 had died.  Her children were Thomas Edward aged 13 a grocer’s errand boy, born in Codnor Park, Leslie George aged 10 born in Huthwaite and William Edgar aged 8 and born at Stanton Hill, Mansfield.  There was also a lodger.  Her death, as Mary P. Stevens is probably registered in the December quarter 1946 in the Chesterfield district.  She was aged 73.  Mary and Henry’s children were

1.      Gladys M Stevens, born about 1895 at Beeston, Notts.

2.      Thomas Edward Stevens, born about 1897 at Ironville.

3.      Leslie George Stevens, born about 1900 at Huthwaite.

4.      William Edgar Stevens, born about 1902 at Stanton Hill, Mansfield.

3.      Fanny Parkin Cotterill (1875 – 1877), born in 1875 (Dececember quarter, Belper) and died in 1877 (2, December quarter, Belper), and registered in the Alfreton sub-district

4.      Ann Parkin Cotterill (1878 – 1878), born in 1878 (March quarter, Belper) and died in 1878 (0, June quarter, Belper), and registered in the Alfreton sub-district

5.      Thomas Parkin Cotterill (1880 – 1937), born about November 1880 at Ironville, and registered in the Alfreton sub-district (December quarter, Belper).  In 1901 boarding with a grocer (his brother-in-law, Henry Stevens) in Hucknall under Huthwaite, he was aged 20, a baker bread maker, born at Ironville.  His death was probably registered in the Hull district in the June quarter 1937.  He was aged 56.

6.      Edward Parkin Cotterill (1883 – 1887), born in 1883 (March quarter, Belper) and died in 1887 (4, March quarter, Belper) and registered in the Alfreton sub-district.

7.      Harriet Parkin Cotterill (1889 – 1889), born in 1889 (June quarter. Belper) and died in 1889 (0, December quarter, Belper), and registered in the Alfreton sub-district. in the Alfreton sub-district.

8.      Son Parkin Cotterill (1891 – 1891), born 1891 and died 1891, and registered in the Alfreton sub-district.

9.      Leslie Parkin Cotterill (1893 – 1896), born in 1893 (September quarter, Belper) and died in 1896 (3, December quarter, Belper), and registered in the Alfreton sub-district.

  1. Fanny, born about 1855 at Ironville. In 1861 she was at home with her parents, aged 5 and born at Ironville. In 1871 she was at home with her parents, aged 15, a pupil teacher and born at Ironville. In 1881 she was at home with her parents, aged 25 a private governess (teacher), and born at Ironville.  She married Joseph Dooley 30 May 1882 at Christchurch, Ironville, after banns.  Fanny was a spinster of Ironville, aged 27 whose father was deceased.  Joseph was a bachelor and turner of Riddings aged 28, a son of Benjamin Dooley, an engine driver.  The witnesses were James William Elliott, Benjamin Dooley and Emma Dooley.  In 1891, in George Street, Riddings, Joseph was aged 37 and an iron turner, Fanny his wife was aged 35 and their children were Joseph aged 7, Fanny E aged 4 and Harold aged 1.  All were born in Alfreton.  In 1901, in South Street, Riddings, the five people were all 10 years older and born in Alfreton,  Joseph sen. was a general foundry turner iron and Joseph jun. was a joiner’s apprentice.  Joseph died 19 January 1908 (registered in 1908 in the Alfreton sub-district, aged 54).  He was an iron turner of South Street, Greenhill Lane, Alfreton.  Probate was granted at Derby 30 May 1908 to Fanny Dooley, widow and his effects were £262.10s.  In 1911, in South Street, Greenhill Lane, Alfreton, in six rooms, Fanny was aged 55, a widow and born in Ironville.  She had been married 29 years and had had three children all of whom were living.  Her children were Joseph aged 27, a house joiner (employer working at home), Fanny Ethel aged 24 and Harold aged 21 gas works clerk, all born at Riddings.  Fanny’s death was registered in 1918 in the Alfreton sub-district.  She was aged 64.  Fanny and Joseph’s children were:

1.      Joseph Dooley, born about 1883 and registered in the Belper district in the June quarter 1883.

2.      Fanny Ethel Dooley, born 1886 and registered in the Belper district in the June quarter 1887.  She married Walter Bailey in the Belper district in the September quarter 1917.

3.      Harold Dooley, born about 1889 and registered in the Belper district in the December quarter 1889.  He married Maud E. Brentnall in the Belper district in the December quarter 1917.

  1. William, born 1859 at Ironville. In 1861 he was at home with his parents, aged 1 and born at Ironville.  His burial was at Christchurch, Ironville, 2 October 1861.  He was aged 2.
