The Family of Charles Stephen Eastland (1832 – 1908)

He was born 1 November 1832 and baptised 28 November 1832 at St James, Westminster. He was a son of Charles Eastland and Amelia Banks, of Robert St. (servant).

He has not been found in 1841 and was with his parents in 1851.

 

In 1861 he was living at 1 Harpur Street, St George the Martyr, Finsbury with his sister, Louisa.  He was unmarried, aged 28, a commercial clerk and born in Bloomsbury.

 

The marriage of Charles Stephen Eastland to Mary Ann E. has not been found.  However, there is a marriage of Charles Stephen Eastwood to Mary Ann Elizabeth Harwood in the September quarter 1863 in the Islington district (original GRO index seen).  This is the registration district also of the first child of Charles and Mary Eastland in 1864.  In the census of 1871 (night of 2 April) the wife of Charles Eastland gave her age as 34 giving a year of birth of 3 April 1836-2 April 1837 and place of birth St Pancras and there is a baptism for a Mary Ann Elizabeth Harwood born 12 March 1837 and baptised 25 June 1837 at St Pancras Old Church, a daughter of William and Sarah.

 

In 1871 at 1 Lowerfield Road, Hornsey, Charles S. Eastland was aged 38 a commercial clerk life assurance and born in Middx St Andrew.  His wife, Mary Ann E was aged 34 and born in St Pancras.  Their children were Alice M aged 6, Charles E aged 5 and Lilian G aged 3, all born in Islington.  There were two servants, a general domestic and a nurserie aid.

 

In 1881 he was living at 132 Drayton Park, London.  He was aged 48, a commercial clerk (coal) and born in Holborn.  His wife was Mary A. E., aged 44 and born at St Pancras.  Their children were Alice M. (16, Islington, millinery apprentice), Charles E., (15, Islington, commercial clerk (coal)), Lilian G. (13, Islington), Elizabeth (7, born in America, British Subject) and Ellen S. (3, Islington). 

 

In 1891 at 191 Highbury Hill, Islington, Charles S was aged 58 a coal merchant’s manager and born in Bloomsbury.  His wife, Mary AE was aged 54 and born in St Pancras.  Their children were Alice M aged 26 a stationer’s shopwoman born in Islington, Charles E aged 25 a commercial clerk born in Islington, Elizabeth L aged 17 a costumier’s assistant born in America and Ellen S aged 13 born in Islington.

 

Mary Ann E. Eastland’s death was registered in the Edmonton district in the June quarter 1894 aged 57.

 

In 1901 at 25 Kings Road, Stoke Newington, Charles S was a widower aged 68 a coal agent born in Bloomsbury.  His children were Charles E aged 35 an export buyer and Lilian G aged 33 a draper’s assistant, both born in Islington.  There were two lodgers, surnamed Woolnough.

 

Charles Stephen Eastland’s death was registered in the Islington district in the March quarter 1908.  He was aged 75.

Charles Ernest Eastland, birth registered in the December quarter 1865 in Islington.

?Herbert William Eastland (1868 – 1869), birth registered in the December quarter 1868 and death registered in the March quarter 1869 both in the Islington district.

?Bertha Emily Eastland (1870 – 1871), birth registered in the March quarter 1870 in the Islington district and death registered in the March quarter 1871 in the Edmonton district, aged 1.

Lilian Gertrude Eastland, birth registered in the June quarter 1867 in Islington.

Elizabeth L. Eastland, born 1873/4 in America.

Ellen Sarah Eastland, birth registered in the September quarter 1877 in Islington.
