The Family of Samuel James Eastland (1841 - 1911)

Samuel James Eastland was born about January 1841, and registered in the March quarter 1841 in the Bloomsbury district, a son of Charles Eastland and Amelia formerly Banks.

 

He has not been found in the 1861 census.

 

He (Samuel James) married Letitia Hunt in the St George Hanover Square district in the September quarter 1865.

 

In 1871 at 13 Brook Green Road, Hammersmith he was aged 30 a beer seller born in Lincolns Inn Fields.  His wife, Letitia, was aged 28 and born in Middx Harlington.  Their child was Minnie Letitia aged 1 and born in Hammersmith.  With them was Susannah Townsend, niece single aged 21 a general servant born in Hornsey.

 

In 1881 he was living at 16 Cumberland St., St George Hanover Square.  He (Samuel T. sic) was an unemployed waiter aged 40 and born in Lincoln’s Inn Fields - not Inn Fields Lincolnshire (sic)!  His wife, Letitia, was aged 41 and born in Arlington, Middx and their two children were Minnie L. aged 11 and Edith L. aged 9, both born in Hammersmith.  With them was a lodger, a soldier’s wife, Emily Robeson aged 28 and born in Manchester.

 

In 1891 at 14 Winchester Street, St George Hanover Square, Samuel J was aged 50 a waiter born in Lincoln’s Inn.  His wife, Letitia was aged 50 and born in Harlington and their children were Minnie L aged 21 a bookkeeper (art needlework) and Edith L aged 19 a florist’s assistant, both were born in Hammersmith.

 

In 1901 at 42 Streathbourne Road Streatham, lodging with Heloise J Le Maitre aged 41 a dressmaker born in France were Samuel J aged 60 a waiter born in Lincolns Inn Fields, Letitia aged 63 born at Harlington and Minnie L aged 30 a bookkeeper born at Hammersmith.

 

In 1911 at 28 Foxbourne Road, Upper Tooting in 6 rooms, Letitia was a widow aged 76 and born in Harlington.  She had been married for 45 years and had had three children one of whom had died.  With her was her unmarried daughter Minnie L aged 41 a bookkeeper dressmaker born in Hammersmith.  There was also Amelia Eastland single and aged 45 her niece and a visitor, a church embroiderer born in Holborn.

 

Samuel James Eastland died 8 February 1911 (registered in the Wandsworth district in the March quarter 1911 aged 70).  Probate was granted at London 8 March 1911 to Minnie Letitia Eastland, spinster.  His effects were £223.18s.7d and was of 28 Foxbourne Road, Upper Tooting, Surrey.

 

Samuel and Letitia’s children were:

Minnie Letitia Eastland, birth registered in the June quarter 1870 in the Kensington district.

Edith Louisa Eastland, birth registered in the September quarter 1871, in the Kensington district.
