The Family of Thomas Crossley (c. 1847 – 1916) of Leeds

Thomas Crossley was born about 1847/8, a son of James Crossley and Jane formerly Walker, at Leeds (the censuses usually indicate this range apart from 1851 and 1901).

 

In 1851 Thomas was at home with his parents, aged 5, born in Leeds.

 

In 1861 he was at home with his parents, aged 13 a setter press printer and born in Leeds.

 

In 1871, he was at home with his parents, aged 23, a currier and born in Leeds. 

 

He may have married Jane Fall in the Leeds district in the June quarter 1874.  If so then he was in the censues as follows:

 

In 1881 at 8 Wright Street, Leeds north-east (St Albans), Thomas Crossley was aged 33, a currier.  His wife, Jane was aged 28.  Their children were Lily aged 6, Annie aged 4 and Nellie aged 7 months.  There was also a boarder, Thomas Fall, single and brother-in-law to Thomas, a house painter.  All were born in Leeds.

 

In 1891, at 84 Freehold Street, Leeds north-east (St Albans), Thomas was aged 43 a currier. His wife, Jane was aged 38 and their children were Lilly aged 16 a boot fitter, William Fall Crossley aged 8 (should be 3) and Jessie aged 1.  All were born in Leeds.

 

In 1901, at the same address, Thomas was aged 55 a leather currier.  His wife, Jane was aged 47 and their children were Lily aged 26 a boot fitter, Herbert aged 18 a boot machine fitter, William Fall Crossley aged 13 a teasel packer in works, Jessie aged 11 and Elsie aged 7.  All were born in Leeds.

 

In 1911, indexed under Crossby, at the same address as in 1901, in 4 rooms, Thomas was aged 63, a currier in the leather industry.  His wife, Jane was aged 58 and they had been married for 36 years and had had 10 children four of whom had died.  Their children were Herbert aged 28 a fitter in textile machinery, William Fall aged 23 an iron turner in general engineering, Jessie aged 21 and Elsie aged 17 both sewing machinists in a skirt factory.  All were born in Leeds. 

 

Thomas Crossley’s death was probably registered in the Leeds district in the March quarter 1916 aged 68 giving a birth year of 1848.

 

Jane Crossley’s death may have been registered in the June quarter 1920 in the Leeds district, aged 67.

 

Thomas and Jane’s children were:

Lily Crossley, born about 1874.  Her birth was probably registered in the Leeds North sub-district 1875.

Annie Crossley, born about 1876.  Her birth was probably registered in the Leeds North sub-district 1877.

Nellie Crossley, born about September 1880.  Her birth was probably registered in the Leeds North sub-district 1880.

Herbert Crossley, born about 1882.  His birth was probably registered in the Leeds North sub-district 1883.

William Fall Crossley (1887 – 1918), birth registered in the December quarter 1887 in the Leeds district.  There is a possible death registration for William F. Crossley aged 31 in the December quarter 1918 in the Leeds district.

Jessie Crossley, born about 1889.  Her birth was probably registered in the Leeds North sub-district 1890.

Elsie Crossley, born about 1893.  Her birth was probably registered in the Leeds North sub-district 1893.
