The Family of James Crack (1771 – 1824) of Whepstead

James Crack was baptised 9 June 1771 at Whepstead, a son of James Crack and Sarah. 

 

He married Judith Pask 20 September 1802 at Whepstead. 

 

He was buried at Whepstead (James junior) 10 September 1824 aged 51. 

 

In 1851, lodging in Rede Road Whepstead was Judith Crack a widow and pauper, aged 71 and born in Whepstead. 

 

She was buried 20 February 1861 in the neighbouring parish of Lawshall, aged 83. 

 

James and Judith’s children were:

James Crack (1803 – 1864), born 19 May 1803 and baptised 22 May 1803 at Whepstead.  He married Ann Battly 27 April 1828 at Great Bookham, Surrey.

In 1841 he was living at Grove Cottages, Great Bookham an agricultural labourer aged 35 and not born in Surrey.  Ann was aged 30, George was aged 12, James was aged 10, Sarah was aged 8, Harriet was aged 6, Mary was aged 3 and William was aged 6 months.

In 1851, he was living at Willis’s Buildings, Great Bookham, aged 47, a shoemaker and born at Webston, Suffolk.  Ann, his wife, was aged 44 and born at Fetcham, Surrey.  Their children were Harriett aged 16, Mary Ann, a servant aged 13, William aged 10, Charles aged 3 and Edward 4 months.  All were born at Bookham.

In 1861, he was aged 57, a shoemaker born at Webstead, Suffolk.  Ann, his wife, was aged 52 and born at Fetcham.  Their children were Charles aged 13 born at Bookham and Edward aged 10 born at Great Bookham.  There was an unmarried visitor, William J. Wenham aged 24, a miller born at Brighton.

James Crack was buried at Great Bookham in 1864 aged 61.

In 1871, living at Eastend Cottages, Great Bookham, was Ann Crack, widow of James Crack shoemaker, aged 64 and born at Fetcham.  With her was her son, Charles, unmarried and aged 23, a groom and born at Great Bookham.  There were two lodgers, Luis Fluter aged 23 a gardener’s labourer born at Hambledon and Lucy Ann Tyrrell a widow aged 60, a laundress and born at Great Bookham.

Anne Crack’s death was registered in the December quarter 1876 in the Epsom district (which includes Great Bookham).  She was aged 70.

James and Ann’s children were:

George Crack, baptised 7 September 1828 at Great Bookham.

James Crack, baptised 25 July 1830 at Great Bookham.

Sarah Crack, baptised 6 January 1833 at Great Bookham.

Harriet Crack, baptised 10 May 1835 at Great Bookham.  She married John Creasy 6 April 1856 at Great Bookham.

Mary Ann Crack, baptised 11 February 1838 at Great Bookham.

William Crack, birth registered in the Epsom district in the December quarter 1840.

Frederick Crack (1843 – 1843), baptised 5 March 1843 at Great Bookham and buried there 6 April 1843 (infant).

Maria Crack (1844 – 1850), baptised 28 July 1844 at Great Bookham and buried there 16 October 1850, aged 6.

Charles Crack, baptised 21 November 1847 at Great Bookham.

Edward Crack, baptised 15 December 1850 at Great Bookham.

John Crack (1805 – 1812), born 14 November 1805 and baptised 1 December 1805 at Whepstead.  He was buried 22 December 1812 at Whepstead, aged 7.

William Crack (1808 – 1821), born 27 September 1808 and baptised 30 October 1808 at Whepstead.  He was buried 21 June 1821 at Whepstead aged 12.

Thomas Crack (1812 – 1856), born 29 June 1812 and baptised 19 July 1812 at Whepstead.  In 1851, in Rede Road, Whepstead, he was lodging in the house of Robert Hammond, with Judith aged 71 (probably mother) and Harriet, a servant aged 17 (probably niece).  He was unmarried, aged 38 an agricultural labourer, born at Whepstead and deaf and dumb.  He was buried 18 December 1856 at Whepstead aged 46.

Harriot Crack (1815 – 1890), born 10 July 1815 and baptised 30 July 1815 (labourer) at Whepstead. 

In 1851, in Rede Road, Whepstead, she was an unmarried house keeper aged 35 and born in Whepstead, in the household of John Pryke a widower aged 52 and born in Whepstead.  She married him in the June quarter 1860 in the Thingoe district.  In 1861, in Rede Road, Whepstead, she aged 43, and John aged 62 an agricultural labourer and both born in Whepstead, were living with her daughter, Harriet and son in law, George Sparke.  In 1871 in The Holes (near Stone Cross), Whepstead, they were aged 73 (labourer) and 53 and both born in Whepstead.  In 1881 at Stone Cross, Whepstead, they were 83 (farm labourer) and 66 and both born in Whepstead.  John was buried at Whepstead 20 June 1889 aged 91 and Harriet was buried there 7 April 1890 aged 76.  Harriet’s daughter was

Harriet Crack (1833 – 1861), born 23 October 1833 (spinster) and baptised 10 November 1833 at Whepstead.  In 1851, in Rede Road, Whepstead, she was a general servant aged 17 and born at Whepstead in the household of Robert Hammond in the next house to her mother.  She (mis-indexed as Craek) married George Sparke in the September quarter 1851 in the Thingoe district.  In 1861, in Rede Road, Whepstead, she was aged 27 and with her husband George aged 31 an agricultural labourer, and their children George aged 8 and Abraham aged 3.  All were born in Whepstead.  John and Harriet Pryke were also with them as George’s in-laws.  Harriet was buried at Whepstead 8 June 1861.  She was aged 27.  In 1881 George was a widower aged 52 in the household of his son George, in Low Leyton.  In 1891 George was a widower aged 62 a general labourer born in Whepstead was living with his son George, in Leyton.  In 1901 he was a boarder at 28 Burdett Avenue, Prittlewell, Essex.  He was aged 71 a widower and a general labourer (builder’s) born in Whepstead.  In 1911 he was living once more with his son George at Westcliff on Sea, Essex, aged 81, born Whepstead and retired with an old age pension, a sewer contractor’s labourer.  A possible death registration is in the Wycombe district in the June quarter 1921.  He was aged 91.

Harriet and George’s children were

George Sparke (1852 – 1928), baptised at Whepstead 5 September 1852 (labourer, late Crack).  He married Anna Sophia Bird in the June quarter 1876 in the Thingoe district.  In 1881 at 7 Holloway Road, Low Leyton, he was aged 28, a general labourer and born in Whepstead.  His wife, Anna S. was aged 28 and born at Whepstead.  Their children were Harriet E. aged 3 born at Sheffield, Yorks, Jane E. aged 1 and born at Leytonstone, Essex, and George J. aged 6 months and born at Kilburn.  His father and brother were with him.  There was also a lodger.  In 1891, at 8 Clarance Road, Leyton, George was aged 38 a general labourer and his wife, Anna S. was aged 38 and both were born in Whepstead.  Their children were Harriet E. aged 13 born Sheffield, Jane E. aged 11 born Leytonstone, George T. aged 10 born Hamstead, John J. aged 8 and Mary A. aged 5 both born in Leytonstone.  George his father and Abraham his brother were also living there.  In 1901, at 1 Kilbey Villas, Balmoral Road, Prittlewell, Essex, George was aged 48, a sewer contractor’s foreman born in Whepstead.  Anna Sophia his wife was also aged 48 and born in Whepstead.  Their children were Jane Elizabeth aged 21 and born in Leytonstone, George Thomas a time keeper s.c. and born in Hampstead, and Mary Ann aged 14 and born in Leytonstone.  In 1911, in 12 rooms at “Chalkwell Towers”, Chalkwell Road, Westcliff on Sea, Essex, George and Anna were both aged 58 and born at Whepstead.  They had been married for 34 years and had hda 5 children, one of whom had died.  George was a sewer contractor’s foreman.  Their unmarried children were Jane aged 31, Mary aged 24. George’s father George was also living with them.  George Sparke’s death was registered in the Romford District in the March quarter 1928.  He was aged 75.  Anna S. Sparke’s death was registered in the Romford district in the March quarter 1941.  She was aged 88.  George and Anna’s children were:

Harriet Eliza Sparke, birth registered in the June quarter 1877 in the Sheffield district.

Jane Elizabeth Sparke, birth registered in the West Ham district in the June quarter 1879.

George Thomas Sparke, birth registered in the December quarter 1880 in the Hampstead district.

John James Sparke (1883 – 1891), birth registered in the West Ham district in the June quarter 1883.  His death was registered in the Richmond South district in the December quarter 1891.  He was aged 8.

Mary Ann Sparke, birth registered in the West Ham district in the June quarter 1886.

Walter Sparke (1855 - 1855), privately baptised at Whepstead 8 October 1855 (labourer, late Crack).  He was buried at Whepstead 11 October 1855 (infant).

Abraham Sparke (1857 - 1910), baptised at Whepstead 2 August 1857 (labourer).  In 1881 he was aged 23 a general labourer born in Whepstead in the household of his brother George, in Low Leyton.  In 1891 he was living with his brother George and apparently married, aged 33 and born at Whepstead.  He married either Amy Ellen Hamsher or Florence Ada Tipper in the September quarter 1889 in the West Ham district.  In 1891 as a boarder was an Amy Sparke, married aged 26, a charwoman and born in Sutton, Surrey.  It seems they were living apart.  There were no children apparent.  In 1901 he appears to have been living in the Rochford district, in Prittlewell, a married boarder and general labourer aged 42 at 1 Campbell Villas, Campbell Road.  He said he was born at Plaistow, Essex.  His death was registered in the Rochford district in the September quarter 1910.  He was aged 53.

Sarah Crack, born 1 February 1818 and privately baptised 3 September 1818 and received 27 September 1818 (shoemaker) at Whepstead.
