Emily Eliza Monteuuis formerly Banks (1843 – 1880)

I am very grateful to Anthony Monteuuis for some of the information on this page.

Emily Eliza Banks was born 14 May 1843 and baptised 23 March 1845 at St Andrew Holborn (11, Grays Inn Terrace, commission agent), a daughter of William Banks and Mary formerly Woodland/Banks.

She married Eugene Monteuuis (indexed as Montennis and also as Montenins, in the June quarter 1877 in the registration district of London City {1c 15}.)  Note: in indexes Montennis is a quite frequent mis-reading of the name, which is pronounced ‘Montwee’).  This was in fact at St Andrew Holborn on Saturday, 26 May 1877.

Her death was registered (as Montenius Emily Eliza), aged 37 in the district of St Giles in the December quarter 1880 (1b 362).  It was actually 30 November 1880 at 9.40 pm and her funeral was on 7 December.  She appears to have had no children.

In the 1881 census Eugene Monteuuis was living at 5 Russell Square, London.  He was a widower, aged 44, a surveyor, born at Boulogne, France and was a naturalised British subject.  He was living alone but had four servants: Anne Stolen, a widow, a housekeeper, aged 63 born at Hertingforbury, Herts, Annie Allen, unmarried, 23 a cook, born at Bognor, Catherine Multon, unmarried, 26, a parlourmaid, born at Devonport and Susannah Philpott, unmarried, 33, a housemaid, born at Fordingbridge.

He married again, to Katharine Amelia Emslie, in the registration district of St Giles, in the September quarter 1881 (1b 952), at St George, Bloomsbury 14 July.

Sadly Katharine's death was registered, aged 38, in the Wandsworth district in the December quarter 1882, associated no doubt with the birth of their son, Louis, whose birth is registered in the same quarter and district.  Later information is that Louis’s birth took place at 3.30 pm 14 October 1882 and Kate died on 23 October at 4.30 am and her funeral was 28 October.

In the 1891 census index Eugene and Louis Emslie Monteuuis (Montennis) are both recorded.

In 1891 a picture of Louis E. Monteuuis (Montennis) was exhibited at the Royal Society of Arts, painted by Alfred Edward Emslie ARWA (Louis’s grandfather?).  Alfred’s address seems to have been 47 Grey’s Inn Road.  Alfred’s wife was also an exhibitor at the Royal Society of Arts.

Eugene Monteuuis died 10 February 1899 (registered, as Montenius and Montennis, aged 62, in the Wandsworth district in the March quarter 1899).  Probate of his will was granted in London to 24 March 1899 to Frank Richardson, solicitor, John Phillips Emslie, artist, and William Roland Emslie, lithographic engraver.  His effects were £42,388.4s.1d and he was of Villa Marquise, Putney Hill, Surrey.

In the 1901 census of the Villa Marquise, Putney Hill, Louis E. Montenis was aged 18, head of the household, with no occupation and born in Putney.  With him were a visitor, Edwin William Jesse, aged 20 single and with no occupation, born Reading, and two servants, Susan L. Micton, aged 43, housekeeper, born Exmouth, Devon and Minnie (or Muriel?) I Bailey, aged 29, a domestic servant, born in Birmingham.  There was a second visitor, Margaret Micton, single, aged 18, a dressmaker’s assistant (worker) born in St Pancras.

Louis married Maud Cabrera in the St George Hanover Square district in the December quarter 1910.

In 1911 (index) Louis, was aged 28 and living in the Wandsworth district, with Maud aged 31.

Louis and Maud’s child was Norman E Monteuuis (indexed as Montennis), born in the Wandsworth district in the March quarter 1913 (mother Cabrera), and he married Mary P.V. Barrett in the Westminster district in the September quarter 1945 (again indexed under Montennis).

On 3 April 1918 Lt L.E. Montennis was seconded from Territorial Force (Yeomanry) to service with MGC (London Gazette).

In 1939 (register), at 42 Summerdown Road, Eastbourne, Louis Monteuuis had a date of birth of 14 October 1882 and Maud 6 May 1879, living on private means.  Norman E. was a doctor (medical) with a date of birth of 27 December 1912.  There was also a married woman, Mary E Courage living on private means with a date of bith of 1 September 1877 and two domestic servants.

Louis’s death was registered in the December quarter 1955 in the Eastbourne district.  His was aged 72.
