The Family of Alice Maude Johnson formerly Pettit (1870 - 1951)

Alice Maude Pettit was baptised 4 April 1870 at Hargrave, a daughter of John Pettit labourer and Eliza formerly Birch. Her date of birth in the 1939 register was found to be 20 March 1870.

She married Ben Johnson.  In the GRO marriage index there is an entry for Alice Maude Pettit and Frederick Benjamin Johnson in the registration district of Poplar (1c 997) December quarter 1898.

In the 1901 census of 201, High Street, West Ham, she is aged 26 (should be 30/31!) and born at Hargrave.  Her husband Ben Johnson, is 24 and an undertaker (worker, at home), born at Bromley by Bow, London.  Their children were Ivy aged 1, born at Bromley by Bow and Elsie, 1, born at Stratford, Essex.  With them was a monthly nurse, Louisa Almeroth, a widow, aged 73, born at Stratford.

 

In 1911 at 35 Vicarage Lane, Stratford, in 6 rooms, Ben Johnson Junr was aged 35, an undertaker (employer) and born at Bromley by Bow, and Alice was aged 37 and born at Bury St Edmunds.  They had been married for 12 years and had had two children both of whom were living.  They were Ivy was aged 11 and born at Bromley by Bow and Elsie was aged 10 born at Stratford.

 

In the 1939 register, Alice M Johnson was living in Hackney with Albert G. and Elsie F. Twinny (sic, surely Twining).  Her birth date was found to be 20 March 1870.

 

Alice Maud (E) died 19 November 1951 (death registration in the Hackney district in the December quarter 1951 for Alice M Johnson aged 81).  She was a widow of 35 Queensdown Road, Clapton, E5 and administration (with will) was granted in London 20 January 1952 to Elsie Fanny Twining, married woman.  Her effects were £209.17s.7d.

 

Ben and Alice’s children were:

Phoebe Ivy A Johnson (1899 – 1937), birth registered in the Poplar district (includes Bromley by Bow) in the December quarter 1899. 

Ivy married George Smith (George F. Smith in the Hackney district in the September quarter 1918) and by him had Phyllis, Renee (lived in Romford) and Teddy. 

Phoebe I. A. Smith died in the June quarter 1937 in the Hackney district, aged 37. 

In 1939 (register) at 33 Hilsea Street, Hackney, George F. Smith had a birth date of 28 March 1897 and was an LPTB Pointsman.  Amelia B Smith had a birth date of 21 August 1890.  George and Amelia were both married.  There was also Phyllis I Smith, later Daniells, with a birth date of 15 January 1919, a tailorless and one other whose record was closed. 

Elsie Fanny Johnson (1901 – 1983), date of birth (death index) 31 January 1901 and birth registered in the March quarter 1901 in the West Ham district (which includes Stratford). 

She married Albert C. (sic) Twining 17 December 1932 (registered in the December quarter 1932 in the Hackney district the groom is given as Albert G. Twining) and had no children. 

In 1939 (register) Elsie F Twinny (sic), birth year 1907, was living with Albert G Twinny (sic), birth year 1906, in Hackney and Alice M Johnson and one other whose record is closed.  When Albert’s father died they took over the family public house “The Three Sisters” in Clapton, London and then kept the Marquis of Cornwallis Public House at Chedburgh.  Elsie died 16 January 1983 (registered as Elsie Fanny Twining, date of birth 31 January 1901, in the March quarter 1983 in the Bury St Edmunds district).  She was of Queensdown, Chedburgh and probate was granted at Ipswich 2 March 1983, £30,441.
