The Family of James Hawksley of South Wingfield

All events are in the parish registers of South Wingfield unless otherwise stated. In marriage entries, (X) indicates that the register was signed with a mark rather than a signature.

James, the son of George and Sarah, was baptised 12 November 1815 and buried 9 June 1878, aged 62. He was a framework knitter, labourer, and collier and married firstly Elizabeth Marriott (X), (the daughter of Samuel Marriott and Hannah, baptised 7 February 1813) a seamer, 28 December 1835. She was buried 6 January 1856, aged 43. She may have had a previous son, Emmanuel, born about 1833, a framework knitter, aged 18 in 1851. James married secondly Ann Booth (a widow, though her father is given as William Booth), 25 May 1858. She was buried 3 September 1861, aged 48. The children of James and Elizabeth were:

  1. George, baptised 22 May 1836 and buried 1 October 1876, aged 40.
  2. James, born about 1838 and baptised 25 December 1841. He was a collier when he married Elizabeth Booth (X) 2 November 1857.
  3. Samuel, born about 1839, baptised 4 April 1841 and buried 18 April 1841.
  4. Alice, born about early January 1841, baptised 25 December 1841 and buried 1 January 1845, aged 3.
  5. Winfield, baptised 6 March 1843. He married Polly (or Dolly) Lynam 17 March 1862 and was an engineer.
  6. Sarah, born about 1845 and baptised 16 February 1850.
  7. Annis (Anice), born about 1847 and baptised 16 February1850.
  8. John, baptised 16 February 1850 and buried 31 March 1850.
